Hello all!
Today is the 4th day of our Oshima trip, how time flies!
The highlight today is that we would be setting sail on board T.S Oshima Maru from Oshima towards Shimonoseki, which is about an 8 hour journey.
Before we proceeded with our respective watchkeeping / engineering duties, we gathered by the berth to have group reporting to ensure that all members are present. We also did a mini safety pledge that was led by the Chief Officer and 1st Engineer.

After which, we all followed the appointed duties given to us in a scheduled format. Some of us reported to the forward station, some to the aft station, some were situated on the bridge, and some were handling the engines. All the duties at our respective areas were supervised closely by the crew members on board the vessel, hence it was a very safe environment for us to make mistakes and learn from the crew members.

The weather was in our favour that day, as we did our watchkeeping / engineering duties smoothly and steadily, and managed to learn a lot from both our Japanese counterparts as well as the friendly crew members on board. It was indeed a unique experience to be able to see how the Japanese work - efficiently and systematically. Everything was in sequence and in proper order, and we all felt very safe to be in such good hands of the crew members!
In light of this, we arrived safely in Shimonoseki in no time!

Upon berthing at Shimonseki safely, we carried out our respective cleaning duties and housekeeping to ensure that the vessel is in tip-top condition. Some duties include: Washing of the toilets, clearing out the trash cans, mopping and vacuuming the decks, as well as metal polishing of the metal plates on the floors where there are doors.
Afterwards, we changed out of our uniforms/boiler suits into casual wear and got ready for our shore leave at Shimonoseki! Before we set off, 800 yen was given to each and every one of us, courtesy of the ship's crew members and Oshima College! The money was for our dinner that night and we are ever grateful for the kindness and hospitality of our Japanese counterpart :)

That night, we ate at one of the Japanese eateries located in one of Shimonoseki's shopping malls. We could order anything we liked with 800 yen! For me (Calista), I had Yakisoba! Once again, we express our gratitude to Oshima College!

Afterwards, we roamed around Shimonoseki with our Japanese buddies guiding us. We had loads of fun shopping and hanging out! However, the shops in the shopping malls close pretty early, at about 8.30pm. Some of us went to the convenient store thereafter before heading back to Oshima Maru.
When we got back, we had our own free time to shower and get ready for lights out. On the other hand, some of us had night rounds to complete, which is to ensure that the vessel is safe of any leakages, possibility of a fire ignition.. etc. I (Calista) was involved in the night round together with Yuzuki, Shin and Rachel. Our night round was led by the 1st Engineer, and it lasted from 10pm to 10.30pm.
After completion of night round, we proceeded for lights out and got rested for the upcoming Day 5!
