DAY 3

Practical Learning about SDGs

We started our day with a lecture on SDGsIan was having SOO much fun with the VR headset. He was playing the back-office game, and he was dizzy afterwards😂 Overall he gave the game an 8/10 rating as it was so realistic! The controls in the game followed Ian's hand movements such as grabbing and throwing. VR in Oshima Kosen is used to try out the placement of safety buoys that send out any tornado signals. The placement of these floaties is important as any tides or currents may displace them and that would be ineffective. Afterwards, for the second segment, we were given maps and tasked to place solar panels around Japan. We found that placing solar panel is actually very difficult as there are many factors to consider.

 Campus Tour

We had an amazing tour around the campus today! We were amazed by the technology made by the lecturers and students. Everybody had many questions as we could not keep our excitement, especially Ian. Ian was enthusiastic about the items as it took him by shock as it was the first time he saw the items! We got to learn about the students and the research they are conducting. they also shared about their inspiration for their research. For example, on the right, you can see Archana trying out a wheelchair with an adaption created by the students. His inspiration was that there are many senior citizens and uneven roads cause hazards if they are wheelchair bound. Thus, he created a device that measures the acceleration and tilt of the wheelchair.

Special Lecture (Disaster Prevention)

We had a lecture on disaster prevention on Oshima Maru training vessel. We were given questions to rank which is the most important form of preparedness in the event of a predicted disaster. The options include investing 15 minutes a day, saving 300 USD annually and focusing on surviving 4 days after the disaster on your own. As a group, we picked an option and had to justify it.

DECK PARTY!!!

Once we were all packed and ready to board, we assembled on the poop deck for a fun time of singing and dancing. We had prepared a dance, and we decided to teach it to the Taiwanese students. We all performed together. After all our dances, we decided to sing a few songs together. Overall, it was a very fun and memorable night!
