Day 5 in Oshima 2K16

Thursday 06 October 2016

Finally the day has arrived ; the day that we gonna sail to Shimonoseki on Oshima Maru vessel.
The excitement is real as we can't wait to start our respective duties on-board. DNS students in their uniforms and engineering students in their boiler suits are ready to set off

Oshima maru
Anchorage duty
DNS students were divided into two groups ; one will be at the bridge doing the watch etc while the other group will be assisting the crew doing the anchorage duty during the starting

Off we go
The navigators and engineers had started their respective duties. The destination took us about 6 hours to reach

Engineers doing their job
Esmail doing sub-sub watch

It's 12pm in the afternoon and it was our lunch time. Readily seated with our hunger and tiring expression on waiting for the food to be served. We had a few rounds as the food was delicious

Lunch
After lunch
After lunch we continued our duties. The engineers went back to their engine room while one of the navigator group took over the previous one. Last duty before we reach our destination to have our offshore leave and be back by 9pm (Japan time) for our roll-call

Nasrin doing the main sub watch
"Small eyes" faces
Reached our destination at 4pm and we were ready for our offshore leave. Split into two groups to have our dinner and mini grocery shopping. After a few rounding just to find a good place to eat , we finally found one empty stall

Dinner place
Cost 950 yen
After dinner we decided to do our mini grocery shopping since most of the shops has already closed as early as 8pm (Japan time). The night was totally cold and some of us were shivering. Perfect night weather indeed

Appreciated the effort from the Japanese students for showing and guiding us around. Great night for us and we were ready for our roll-call at 9pm. After roll-call , the group leaders have to do their night duty while the others went for shower and getting ready to turn in. Day 6 tomorrow.

Day 4 in Oshima 2K16

Wednesday 05 October 2016

It's just a day before our sailing and we can't wait for tomorrow to come. But first we had our sports activities together with the Japanese students and also a few of the International students. It was the first day of typhoon but we still carried on with the activities as we don't want miss any chances while we were here

Dark clouds

It was not easy for the both team to play since it was very cold and windy with strong winds. Most of us slipped due to the wet and muddy grass. It was embarrassing moment but hilarious. The team with Captain Federick won the match but what's more important we get to play as one enjoying ourselves

We had fun together
Head back to our dormitory to have our shower and getting ready for our dinner gathering with the Japanese students together with their professors and chief engineer

Captain, chief engineer and Professors

Engineers
Navigators
We had a good and close bonding session between two countries. Took tons of pictures together as a memory. Captain Federick and the professors exchanged gifts with one another. And what's more important the buffet was marvelous. We had a non-stop eating session haha. Great gathering!

Fresh juicy fruits
Selfie
It was an exhausting day for us but we really had fun together. Our stomachs were full and we do need plenty of rest before sailing off. Before ending the day we had a small "party" gathering with the Japanese students at the guesthouse where all of us sang songs and enjoying the "supper".

Goodnight

Day 3 in Oshima 2K16

Tuesday 04 October 2016

Today was the day that we get to have our first shopping at Hiroshima and an excursion visit to the Peace Memorial Museum. But first let's have our breakfast at the dormitory before moving off! Anyways Good Morning!

The destination from the dormitory to Hiroshima took us 1 hour and 30 minutes! Indeed a long journey and some us took the time to sleep.

The long journey has ended and finally we have reached our destination! We had to walk a few miles to reach the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum

Remains after the atomic bomb

Commonly called the Atomic Bomb Dome or Genbaku Domu in Japanese. Serves as a memorial to the people who were killed in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6 1945. Over 70000 people were killed instantly. First atomic bomb dropped by United States Army Air Force.

"Little boy"
"Little boy" was the code-name for the type of atomic bomb. Weigh 9700 pounds (4,400 kg)
Short footage during the bombing
It was a great learning excursion for us. Brought back 2 positive and 2 negative remarks from this trip on what have we discover and learnt in the museum

Group photo

It's already in the noon and all of us are famished. And it's the perfect timing to have our lunch. Separated into two groups; one wanted the udon (noodle) and other one wanted to have rice.
Let's filled our tummy with foods!

Omurice with black pepper beef
Only cost 1000 yen ( 13 SGD) and we were done with lunch. The foods were amazing hoping to order more but time is constraint and we yet to do our shopping. So let's go.

Shopping begin
After a long day in Hiroshima we have to get back to our dormitory because it was already late and we need to get back by dinner time.

Day 3 in Oshima has finally ended and I believe most of us were exhausted after a long day out. After dinner we had our shower and waited for our roll-call at 2000 (Japan time) before proceeding to the guest house for our meeting with Captain Federick.

Day 2 in Oshima 2k16

Monday 3rd October 2016

Every single morning we will have our roll-call at 0700 (Japan time) before starting our day. Today first activity we will be getting inside Oshima Maru to have our briefing session before sailing on the next following day!

Time for breakfast!

The front view

Dressed up in our DNS uniform for Nautical students and formal attire for Engineering students! We can't wait to "explore" what is inside the vessel haha. The weather was cooling out there

Chief officer
We had a short briefing session on what are we gonna do during our sailing. Somehow we couldn't understand his English accent but we got what he meant. Appreciate his effort for trying his best! We were assigned to our respective group

Muster List
After the briefing we were told to put on our life-jacket and helmet when the chief officer brought us out to show where is the EPIRB and SART. He also explained to us what was it for and how to operate them

After our first activity has ended , we proceed on to their simulator room at one of the building

Trying out before the actual one

It was unfortunate for the DNS year 1 since we have not been taught on the radar yet but overall it was a good experience trying out. First time learning was great and appreciate those Japanese students who willing to help out. And we crashed thrice haha!

English lesson

The last activity was in the classroom. We were supposed to teach one of the class an English language for at least 40 minutes and we have to present. Taught them some of the nautical terms and translate in Japanese. Didn't know it was super hot in there. Haha most of us were perspiring

Dinner

Day 1 in Oshima 2k16

Sunday 02 October 2016
Before landing in Tokyo
Safely landed in Tokyo Haneda Airport at 0630 (Japan time) and off to have our domestic flight (NH 633) to Iwakuni at 0840. Gonna be an hour journey there!

NH 633 Flight

After landed around 1020 , we quickly collected our luggage as we were told that the Japanese students and their Professor Yoriko were waiting to fetch us. It was bright sunny out there!
There was a coach to send us to their domitory.

Lunch meal

Unfortunately some of us didn't manage to finish up since it's our first time trying their food out and not easy for us to adapt. Nevertheless it was a good experience to taste! And we were told that we gonna climb up the 3rd highest mountain in Oshima right after we leave our luggage in our own dormitory room. HAHA some of us was showing their stunned reaction

The climbing begin!

Showing our smiling face even though we are dying haha

No matter how hot the weather was and how deadly tired we were , we didn't gave up and keep on climbing till we reach the top. It was their first time for those Japanese students too and was surprised they didn't complain a single word but instead giving us some encouraging words!

Before climbing up

Finally we made it!!!!

Our mission to climb up the 3rd highest mountain without any rest after long hours of flight was a great success! Working as one team and pushing one another till the very top! We were so deadly tired and some of us start having cramps. Good job guys!

View from the top
Dinner
At the end of the day everyone was starving. After had our shower , we came down to have our first dinner together with the Japanese students! And that marks our first day here.
